Volcanoes National Park-Gorilla Destination in Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park is located in northwestern Rwanda covering 160 km2 of rain forest and encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains, namely Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo. It borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.

Volcanoes national park is home to the mountain gorilla and the golden monkey and was the base for the primatologist Dian Fossey.  The park was first gazetted in 1925 as a small area bounded by Karisimbi, Bisoke and Mikeno, intended to protect the gorillas from poachers and first National Park to be created in Africa.

How to Getting there

Ruhengeri can easily be reached by public transport from the Rwandan capital of Kigali or the northwestern city of Gisenyi. There is no public transport from Ruhengeri to the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park, where the gorillas are located, so visitors who aren’t on a tour should plan to hire a car with four-wheel drive and driver.

This will cost about $60 a day from Ruhengeri, $150 per day from Kigali, about a 90-minute drive. Travelers should check for information on suggested inoculations and health precautions.
