Virunga National park
Virunga National Park also referred to as Parc National des Virunga is situated a few kilometers off the busy Goma Town and a prominent safari destination known for offering remarkable Gorilla Trekking Adventures to all travelers interested in tracking the Mountain Gorillas of DR Congo. It covers an area of 7,800 km2 (3,000 sq mi) expanding from the Virunga Mountains South of Mountain Rwenzori in the North and Eastern DR Congo along the boundary of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda as well as Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda. The Park is under the management of the National Park Authorities, the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and the Virunga Foundation.
Other than Mountain Gorilla Trekking in the Park, travelers can also hike to the top of the majestic Mountain Nyiragongo Volcano due to the location of this strato volcano at the middle of the park.
Gorilla Trekking Permit
The Gorilla Trekking Permit in DR Congo costs US $400 per person interested in tracking the rare species of Mountain Gorillas in Virunga National Park. These can be obtained through the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) or a valid Tour Operator agency that can help book the permits on request and behalf of the traveler.
Other than Gorilla Trekking travelers can enjoy Hiking Adventures along Mountain Nyiragongo Volcano, Go Bird Watching, Nature walks.
Note: The Park has been closed to visitors since June 2nd, 2018 following a kidnapping incident close to Goma in May 2018.
