Volcanoes National Park
Also referred to as Parc National des Volcans, Volcanoes National park is situated North West of Rwanda bordering the prominent Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and a good safari destination for all travelers interested in tracking the rare species of Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys in Rwanda. The park also offers hiking Adventures to travelers due to the presence of 5 of the Virunga Volcanoes i.e Mount Karisimbi, Mout Bisoe, Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura and Mount Sabinyo.
Gorilla Trekking is the most prominent safari activity here and there are 10 different Gorilla Groups that can be tracked and these live hierarchically with a dominant Male Silver back Gorilla leading, followed by Adult Females, Young Gorillas which are followed by the juveniles/ infant Gorillas.
Gorilla Trekking Permit
The Gorilla Trekking Permit in Rwanda can be obtained direct through contacting the Rwanda Development Board or through a valid Tour Operator Agency which can help you book and obtain these on behalf of the Travelers. This costs US $1500 per person interested in tracking Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda. This is expensive compared to that in Uganda at US $600 and DR Congo at US $400 per person.
Vegetation in the Park
The park has vegetation which varies due to the large altitudinal range within the park with humid slopes in the South and West, Neoboutonia forest from 2400m to 2500m as well as bamboo forest from 2500m to 3200m.
Other than the prominent Mountain Gorillas in the park, there are also other Wildlife animals and these include; Golden Monkeys, black-fronted duiker, buffalo, spotted hyena and bushbuck which are estimated to be between 1760–7040 animals in number as well as various Bird species.
