Detailed Itinerary of 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari

Day 1: Pick-up, Rwanda City and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly by our representative (your private-guide) and a after a short briefing about your Rwanda safari and what you should expect, you will head for a Kigali City Tour. Visit some of the highlights of the city including Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, Craft Markets, Kandt National Museum and the Presidential Museum.

After this eye-opening experience, you will enjoy lunch at a restaurant in Kigali City. After lunch you will embark on a journey to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze, Kinigi with a drive through thousands of rolling hills. From Kigali City, it is a drive of approximately 2 hours to arrive at the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes.

On arrival in the late afternoon, you will check in at your lodge and spend the evening at leisure. Later have dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Wake up early for breakfast, meet your guide and head to the briefing point (park headquarters of Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi) for briefing about gorilla trekking and the right way to behave in the presence of the gorillas. In groups of 8 people you will be assigned a gorilla family to trek, then head to the starting point and enter the emerald jungle in search for mountain gorillas.

The trek takes approximately 2 to 6 hours or more depending on the movement of the mountain gorillas and where they spent their previous night. On locating the gorillas, you are allowed to spend only one hour in the presence of the gorillas observing them play, feed, groom and take amazing pictures and videos (remember to shut your flashlight when taking photos).  Watch a female gorilla breast feed its baby under a watchful gaze of a dominant silverback.

When one hour is over, you will trek back to the park headquarters, meet your guide and head back to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you will either take part in optional activities such as visiting the Musanze caves or the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Later return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Visit Gorilla Guardians Village and Departure

Enjoy a leisure breakfast, meet your guide and head to the Gorilla Guardians Village formerly known Iby’Iwacu Village for a cultural experience giving you an insight into the history and culture of Rwanda, this village is home to some of the former poachers who depended on the forest for survival.

Visiting this village contributes heavily to conservation of the mountain gorillas because they are able to earn from sharing their culture as opposed to poaching, you will be entertained by local dances and drama, take part in crowning of the King and Queen, be entertained by local dances and drama among other activities which will give more insight about the culture and traditions of the local Rwandese people.
